Boracay's "casino past": what existed before, and why it disappeared

Boracay is known for its beaches, sunsets and nightlife, but every few years the same question returns: did the island have a casino before?

A licence, not a venue

In 2017 the gaming regulator issued a provisional licence for an integrated resort. Plans were announced, but nothing was built before the island closed.

The 2018 closure

In April 2018 Boracay shut to tourists for a six-month environmental rehabilitation, and new casino development was blocked while the clean-up ran.

Reversal and retreat

The moratorium was lifted in 2021. By then the original partnership had fallen apart, and the largest operator later ruled Boracay out. The full sequence is on the timeline.
